Large Sample Univariate Procedures for Comparing and Combining Effect Sizes Within a Single Study

Abstract
Subjects from experimental and control groups are usually compared in evaluation and research studies in education. The comparison is frequently summarized in a treatment effect statistic. The purpose of this paper is to present large sample univariate methods for comparing effect sizes within a single study between independent groups of different subjects on a single dependent measurement and between independent groups that are assessed on the same dependent variable but using a different test. Effect sizes that are not found to differ can be pooled to determine an overall study effect. Each of these methods is illustrated using data from educational research. Estimates are presented for large sample situations.
