Polyethers. XII. Poly‐(2,6‐disubstituted‐1,4‐phenylene oxides)

Abstract
A number of poly(p‐phenylene oxide) polymers have been prepared from 4‐bromophenols with various combinations of methyl, propyl, allyl, and phenyl groups in the 2,6‐positions. Potassium ferricyanide, lead dioxide, and 2,4,6‐tri‐tert‐butylphenoxy radical have been used as initiators. The reactions proceed to higher molecular weights under nitrogen. These polymers are soluble resins of low molecular weight, softening somewhat above 100°. Those with allyl groups become insoluble and infusible on exposure to air for several days.
