Abstract
Minute Doppler shifts of Fraunhofer absorption lines of the Sun as a whole have been measured using optical resonance spectrometers operating simultaneously from widely separated sites on the Earth. The excellent correlation between these oscillations and their global spatial extent, long coherence time and approximate agreement with theoretical models demonstrate that these oscillations are normal acoustic modes of the whole Sun. The seismology of the Sun which is thus made possible is likely to contribute not only to our understanding of the Sun, of the structure and evolution of stars and of cosmology but also, taken in conjunction with the solar neutrino experiments, to the physics of the neutrino. Keywords
