Elastic Scattering ofC12,N14, andO16byPb208and ofO16byBi209

Abstract
Differential cross sections have been measured for elastic scattering of C12, N14, and O16 by Pb208 and of O16 by Bi209. A phase-shift analysis of the data was made to evaluate the nuclear interaction radius R and the "surface thickness" for the interaction ΔR. The interaction-radius parameter r0 was found to be 1.44±0.03 F for all four scattering experiments, where R=r0(A113+A213), the Ai being the nuclear masses of the two nuclei involved in the scattering process. In contrast to the constant value found for r0, the "surface thickness" was found to be 0.31±0.02 F for the N14 scattering, 0.42±0.04 F for the O16 scattering on both Pb208 and Bi209, and 0.49±0.05 F for the C12 scattering. It is not clear why these "surface thicknesses" differ as they do.
