Mycoplasma Pneumoniae and Viral Infections in Childhood Asthma

Abstract
The association of respiratory viral infections and acute recurrence of wheezing were studied in 121 asthmatic children in the course of 143 hospital admissions. Evidence of viral or mycoplasma-pneumoniae infctions was sought from serology and/or virologic studies of nasal aspirates. In 46 of these admissions (32 per cent), a respiratory viral or mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was documented. Twenty of these 46 admissions (42 per cent) were associated with mycoplasma-pneumoniae infection. Parainfluenza virus infection was the next commonest associated infection, accounting for 12 admissions (25 per cent) followed by the respiratory syncytial viruses (11 admissions, 23 per cent). Influenza A virus and Rhinovirus were found in four admissions (8 per cent) each and adenovirus in three (6 per cent). We conclude that mycoplasma-pneumonia and respiratory viruses are common precipitants of wheezing episodes in asthmatic children in Singapore.
