Abstract
Paid speech aides and volunteers were trained to supplement and expand services provided by speech and language specialists. The project, undertaken by the Los Angeles Unified School District, was designed to train aides to provide remedial instruction aimed at increasing the articulation skills and language levels of pupils with articulatory disorders and at preventing speech problems in younger children through providing them with speech and language learning experiences. This article details the qualifications for selection of the aides, the duties they performed, and the preservice training program implemented prior to their assignment to the schools. Postinstruction data revealed that the supportive personnel successfully expanded and supplemented the services of the speech and language specialists, providing a valuable contribution to the speech and language program. Keywords
