Studies on the tannins of avaram (Cassia auriculata) bark

Abstract
The amorphous material extracted by acetone from Cassia auriculata bark consists largely of (-)-auriculacacidin (5,2',4'-trihydroxyflavan-3,4-diol), a compound of novel type characterized by crystalline derivatives. Its constitution has been demonstrated by oxidation of the trimethyl ether with potassium permanganate to 2,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid and 2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzoic acid and by periodic acid to 2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzaldehyde.
