Effect of Dietary Protein and Ascorbic Acid Levels on Biosynthesis of Collagen.

Abstract
The biosynthesis of collagen by the rat, as measured by the sponge implant technique, was significantly influenced by both the protein and ascorbic acid levels of the diet. At the end of the first week on an 8% protein diet, with and without extra vitamin C, the sponge collagen measured 37.2 mg and 24.0 mg/g sponge; collagen synthesis in animals fed 22% protein diets gave corresponding values of 66.4 mg and 45.7 mg/g sponge respectively. The effects due to extra vitamin C were not evident by the 3d week.
