Abstract
M. japonicus is a common luminescent fish on the coast of Japan. Thp photogenic organs, which consist of 2 ovoid protuberances near the tip of the chin, are excretory glands, although the luminous material does not escape under normal conditions. They are compound, each being made up of some 9 components which unite into a functional whole. The distal part shows the compound nature, and consists of many narrow parallel canals each representing the duct of an individual gland. As to its photogenic organs, Monocentris approaches 2 other luminous fishes, Anomalopsis and Photoblephalon, but shows several structural differences. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
