An isolation ofLeptospiraserotypePomonafrom a domestic cat

Abstract
Extract Sir,-Leptospirae have been isolated infrequently from domestic cats. The first recorded isolation, serotype icterohaemorrhagiae, was by Mertens ( 1938 Mertens, W. K. 1938. Over het voorkomen van {iLeptospira icterohaemorrhagiae} bij katten. Ned. indische Bl. Diergeneesk., 50: 78–79. [Google Scholar] ). The Leptospiral Serotype Distribution List ,( 1966 U.S. Dep. Hlth Welf. Educ. 1966. Leptospiral Serotype Distribution Lists, Atlanta, Georgia: Comrrmnicable Diseases Centre. [Google Scholar] ) contains seven references to isolations of leptospirae of which only one is for serotype pomona (Gordon-Smith et al., 1961 Gordon-Smith, C. F. , Turner, L. H. , Harrison, J. L. and Brown, J. C. 1961. Animal leptospirosis in Malaya. Methods, zoogeographical background and broadanalysis of results. Bull. Wld Hlth Org., 24: 5–21. [Google Scholar] ). It has also been demonstrated (Ferris and Andrews, 1962 Ferris, D. H. and Andrews, R. D. 1962. Leptospira pomona in the feral cat. Am. J. vet. Res., 26: 373–376. [Google Scholar] ; Fessler and Morter, 1964 Fessler, J. F. and Morter, R. L. 1964. Experimental feline leptospirosis. Cornell Vet., 54: 176–190. [Google Scholar] ) that cats can be experimentally infected with pomona with consequent histological changes in organs and leptospiruria lasting for several months. Leptospirae have not been isolated from cats in New Zealand. Rees ( 1964 Rees, H. G. 1964. Leptospirosis in a cat. N.Z. vet. J., 12: 64–64. [Taylor & Francis Online] [Google Scholar] ) reported a titre of 1/3,000 to pomona in the serum of a sick cat. On post-mortem examination, the cat showed lesions of nephritis and icterus which were suggestive of leptospirosis. We wish to record the isolation of Leptospira serotype pomona from a domestic farm cat from the Hauraki Plains area of New Zealand.
