Abstract
The second somatic area of the cat was mapped by means of cortical potentials evoked by tactile stimulation of the contra-lateral body surface. A detailed pattern of localization was observed. The second somatic area overlaps the cortical region responsive to click stimuli extensively in the anterior ectosylvian gyrus. A widespread pattern of cortical potentials was evoked by electrical stimulation of the contralateral superficial radial nerve, which innervates the skin of the dorsal surface of the forepaw. Foci of maximal response amplitude were observed in Somatic I and Somatic II. The region of the second somatic area in which responses to contralateral superficial radial nerve stimulation were recorded overlaps the click response field extensively in the anterior ectosylvian gyrus. Keywords
