Abstract
A proposal is presented for compensation of long ac transmission lines entirely by shunt devices designated as reactance controllers. Fundamental design of the reactance controller as a transmission line shunt compensating device is established. Application of reactance controllers to transmission lines is described as well as a theoretical approach for the Transmission Planner to evaluate controlled shunt reactance compensation for future and existing transmission schemes. Keywords
