Fish cutaneous mucus: A new source of skin surface lipid

Abstract
Mucus from several species of marine fishes contained up to 20 times more lipid per unit area than human sebum. The analyses revealed free fatty acids which may provide protection against bacterial and fungal attack. Carotenoids were prominent components. The amount of phospholipids present in fish mucus seems to determine its viscosity.Keywords
