Abstract
Pelomyxa carolinensis should be designated Amoeba carolinensis (Wilson, 1900) Hegner and Taliaferro, 1924. Amoebae led on Paramecium caudatum in hay and wheat culture media were compared with those fed on Chilomonas paramecium in the same media. The amoebae in the wheat medium feeding on P. caudatum had the highest reproduction rates and were usually rounded in form. Those in both hay and wheat medium feeding on chilomonads contained the largest and most numerous spherical bodies, but showed little reproduction. They usually had long, thin pseudopods which often were branched. The hay medium with P. caudatum was unfavorable for reproduction. The results of these expts. agree in general with similar ones on Amoeba proteus. Nu-clear division is described, the number of chromosomes being about 300. The stages closely resemble those described for A. proteus, except that the giant amoeba has smaller figures correlated with a smaller number of chromosomes. Keywords
