Abstract
Constraints on the autonomy of elderly people with disabilities arise from low goal formulation and underestimated potentials for self-realization and full participation in society. Elderly persons themselves embrace an elderly mystique, as do formal and informal providers, who concentrate on activities of daily living and avoiding nursing home placement. Suggested is the utility of reviewing the effects of the Women's, Mentally Retarded, and Independent Living Movements to assess the presence or absence of elements analogous or applicable to the physically disabled elderly. Keywords
