Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to study the biuretolytic activity of rumen microorganisms when ruminants fed low quality hay were given a corn base supplement containing 9.6% biuret at intervals of 1, 2 and 4 days. Those animals receiving the supplement daily and those which received twice the daily base quantity every 2 days were able to develop and maintain a substantial amount of biuretolytic activity throughout the 33-day period. Animals receiving four times the daily base quantity of the supplement at 4-day intervals could neither develop comparable biuretolytic activity, nor maintain the activity present prior to initiation of the four day supplementation.
