ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF GALLIONELLA FERRUGINEA

Abstract
The morphology of Gallionella ferruginea was studied by electron microscopy using air-dried preparations of a laboratory cultivated strain of the organism. The stalks consisted of definite linear strands which varied in number per stalk and which exhibited a segmented pattern of secretion. Dense cells possessing electron opaque granules as well as membrane-like or "ghost" cells were seen.
