Abstract
Based on participant-observation, this article states that the organization of the work of design in firms is closely linked to the type of "intermediate objects " (texts, graphs, models, maquettes, etc.) used. These objects play a threefold role as : a translation of organizational objectives, an intermediary among designers and an image of the projects being pursued. The developments that might occur by taking such objects into account in current research on the methods and tools for design are mentioned.
