Abstract
Ninety-two squabs, not over 35 days old, were examined. Eighty-three of these had Ascaridia larvae and 66 had Capillaria infections. The latter were mature. Eggs taken from them were enlarged and they produced infections in chicks. Since squabs take all their food from parent birds up to about 3 weeks this would leave only 14 days for maturation of the worms if the squabs infected themselves. This figure is under the minimum experimental prepatent period of 19 days and it is therefore suspected that infections must have occurred during the parental feeding period. This is not unlikely and has been shown for Trichomonas gallinae. The Ascaridia prepatent period is 48-50 days and no mature worms of this species were found.
