PHARMACOLOGICAL TREATMENTS OF DEMENTIA (NON-CHOLINERGIC)

Abstract
Clinical trials in dementia have had two main sources of inspiration (i) the findings of animal studies, which have investigated the biochemical basis of memory; and (ii) ideas derived from consideration of the pathophysiology of the disorder. Animal studies have instigatod trials of RNA, vasopressin, and various other substances. Pathophysiological considerations have resulted in trials of vasodilators, hyporbaric oxygen, anticoagulants, and CNS stimulants. The present paper discusses these two areas of research in turn, and then considers some possibilities for future developments.
