Precipitating Antibodies to Herpes Simplex Virus in Human Sera: Prevalence of Antibody to Common Antigen (Band II)

Abstract
The sera of 140 female subjects were investigated for precipitating antibody to type 1 and type 2 herpes simplex antigen. 73 of these sera formed a common precipitin line against type 1 and type 2 virus antigen which in every case gave a reaction of identity with type 1 ‘Band II’ antigen. Thus antibody to ‘Band II’, a major structural antigen, was represented in every serum which immunoprecipitated type 1 or type 2 virus antigen.
