Abstract
Summary A sensitive, specific and accurate radioimmunoassay for plasma androstenedione (androst-4-ene-3,17-dione) without chromatography is described. There was good correlation between analyses with and without use of a Sephadex LH20 column. The intra-assay coefficient of variation was 2·7 per cent for 15 samples and the inter-assay precision was 7·1 per cent for 45 samples. The specificity of the antibody was satisfactory when examined with 25 different steroids, testing their ability to compete with [3H]-androstenedione for binding sites. Sensitivity was 5 pg per sample and the blanks were negligible. Normal androstenedione levels (mean ± s.d.) were 0·93 ± 0·32 ng/ml (3·24 ± 1·12 nM, n−150) in normal females and 0·83 ± 0·26 ng/ml (2·89 ± 0·91 nM, n = 30) in malesKeywords
