Abstract
A study was made of the effect of cylinder-doffer setting in the card on hook formation, and the influence of drafting direction on U-shaped hook removal, regularity of output sliver, and yarn properties. The results show that the U-shaped hooks are present in the card sliver to the extent of about 13-22%. The cylinder-doffer setting influences trailinq hooks in East African cotton. The regularity of card sliver increases with windening of cylinder-doffer setting. The U-shaped hooks are removed to a considerable extent during drafting, but always at a lesser degree than total hooks. The drawing sliver drafted with majority hooks in the trailing way gives more regular output sliver, with respect to both short-term and long-term evenness, than that in the leading way. The yarns spun with majority hooks drafted on ring frame as trailing hooks give higher single-thread strength, compared to those as leading hooks. Keywords
