Abstract
Based on an analysis of statutes from all 50 states, this research addresses questions regarding the extent and style of antismoking laws. Examination is also made of the nature of public settings where smoking is prohibited. From a theoretical perspective, these aims are guided by several postulates outlined in the sociology of law literature. The prevalence and style of antismoking laws are related to the relative degree of urbanization in each state and to the type of social interaction, personal or impersonal, expected in various settings prohibited to smoking. Keywords
