Abstract
This paper reports on issues of conservation, equitable use of resources, and the improvement of quality of life for all persons living in densely populated cites. Case studies are presented that examine UNESCO's concept of biosphere reserve, demonstrating the elasticity and usefulness of the concept as a way to promote global sustainability and governance on local, regional and global levels. Keywords
