Abstract
It is shown that the sharp resonance effects observed in many transmutations involving light nuclei require the existence of fairly strict selection rules to limit the decay rates of the corresponding compound nuclei. Such selection rules in several cases follow from the slowness of the interconversion of spin and orbital angular momentum. Some consequences of this are discussed for the bombardment of B and F by protons. Keywords
