Abstract
Despite the relevance of anthropol ogy's field work methods and focus on social institutions and processes, and despite much interest in applied anthropology, there seems relatively little use of anthropology by plan ners. While this communication gap is at times bridged via use of an thropology in planning for particular groups, in urban design, and in pro gram evaluation, the greatest poten tial seems to lie in the joint explora tion of particular topics — like the "informal sector"— and in the way in which anthropological perspec tives indirectly shape concepts and problem definitions. Keywords
