On Lok Senior Day Health Center: A Case Study

Abstract
The On Lok Senior Day Health Center has been established as one link in a planned chain of services and programs needed to maintain the frial elderly in the community at a maximum level of functioning. It serves three principal ethnic groups of residents in the Chinatown/North Beach area of San Francisco: Chinese, Filipino, and Italian-American as well as other elderly. The focus is on health care, physical and occupational therapy for rehabilitation and maintenance, social services, and nutrition, with therapies delivered by bilingual professional and para-professional staff 7 days a week. Evaluation has emphasized the impact on On Lok's services on participants; has compared On Lok participants to other residents of the area, either presently in nursing homes or remaining in the community without On Lok's services; and has established costs for On Lok services.
