Abstract
The effects of the state of the deuteron wave function and of the pickup scattering on elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering are investigated within the framework of the impulse approximation and with the neglect of the multiple scattering. A detailed examination is made of the various terms which arise from the identity of the incident nucleon with the target nucleons, and of these only the so-called pickup term is retained in the calculation. The latter term is treated only in Born approximation; the validity of this approximation is discussed. The computations which are carried out at 40 and 150 MeV indicate that the effects of the state and of the pickup scattering are quite large for scattering in the backward hemisphere.
