STENOSIS OF THE VERTEBRAL ARTERY AT ITS ORIGIN FROM THE SUBCLAVIAN ARTERYA Radiological and Histological Study

Abstract
The occurrence of stenosis of the vertebral artery at its origin from the subclavian artery was investigated by radiological and histological examinations post mortem. The material consisted of 18 adults aged 48-91 years and 3 children age 0-2 years. All the adults showed stenosis at the origins of the vertebral arteries, while no stenosis occurred in the children. The stenosis may be symmetrical or asymmetrical. Both types of narrowing were encountered at different ages in the adults. Histological examination showed that both the symmetrical and the asymmetrical narrowing are manifestations of arteriosclerosis. Thus the symmetrical narrowing represents a pathological change and is not a normal variation in a healthy vessel.
