Music theory---a programming linguistic approach

Abstract
EUTERPE is an on-line, real-time computer-music system currently in operation at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. It was designed to enable the representation of a musical score in the format of an extended assembly language for a special-purpose parallel processor. Through this system, many conventional concepts of musicology have analogous concepts as programs or meta-programs. Thus, a programming language may be used to model a musical composition more formally than conventional musicology permits. Furthermore, such models may then be manipulated by programs which produce original compositions.
