Abstract
The principal urinary metabolite of the pineal gland hormone melatonin was measured in pinealectomized and sham-operated male rats and shown to be a valid index of pineal gland activity. Pinealectomy decreased its excretion by 97–99%. Extrapineal synthesis of melatonin does not contribute significantly to circulating melatonin, as determined by this integrative measure of its major conjugated metabolite. Keywords
