THE ANEMIA OF INFECTION. II. THE EXPERIMENTAL PRODUCTION OF HYPOFERREMIA AND ANEMIA IN DOGS 1

Abstract
In dogs it was possible to induce hypoferremia and anemia by producing abscesses through the intramusc. injn. of staphylococci. The hypoferremia preceded the development of anemia. Staphylococcal toxins failed to cause anemia and produced only a moderate lowering of the plasma Fe. Typhoid vaccine failed to produce either hypoferremia or anemia. Sterile turpentine abscesses, however, caused pronounced hypoferremia within 48 hrs. It is suggested that under the conditions of infection the tissues have a high requirement for Fe. As a result, Fe is not available for Hb synthesis.
