Abstract
By focusing upon the rhetoric of Governor George C. Wallace, this study isolates, describes, and characterizes those elements inherent to the rhetorical strategy of polarization. Previous studies of “polarization” have failed to encompass both message and non‐message variables in their attempts to explain the process of polarization. This study discusses numerous message and non‐message variables before positing generalizations about polarization as a genre of discourse. Keywords
