Abstract
This paper describes a practice theory of nursing for the elderly which focuses on maintaining the maximum amount of independence of elderly patients through a nursing focus on the full range of human functional abilities. Derived from the general self‐care nursing theory, the practice theory interrelates the varied health related characteristics and numerous health care requirements of the elderly with theoretical components of self‐care nursing theory. The resulting framework is a population specific nursing practice theory which guides nurses and their patients in meeting desired, age‐appropriate health care goals. Keywords
