Abstract
The energy of an atom as a function of all topographically different configurations of its nearest neighbours in the whole range of coordination in the FCC lattice is calculated using a simple Huckel-Hamiltonian. The result follows closely the square-root dependence of the coordination number. The implications of this result in the effective-medium theory of metals are discussed. Keywords
