Structure activity relationships of thiosemicarbazones on vaccinia virus and IBT-dependent mutant

Abstract
Twenty-seven isatin β-thiosemicarbazone (IBT) related chemicals, among them benzaldehydes, triazinoindoles, pyrrolidine and acyclic compounds, were examined for their capability to inhibit the growth of vaccinia virus and to support the growth of the IBT-dependent mutant in BSCI cells. Eighteen compounds did not affect the growth of either one of the two virus strains. Nine compounds, which had an intact thiosemicarbazone side chain, attached to a certain cyclic structure, were able to inhibit the growth of the wt strain and to support the growth of the IBTD mutant. No compound was found to perform only one of these two functions.
