THE DREAMS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL SUBJECT

Abstract
Examination of the dreams of 10 experimental volunteer subjects revealed a great deal of anxiety related to the experimenter, the experimental room and equipment, their own behavior and the conditions of their volunteering. Of 111 dreams dreamt over 40 nights, approximately one-third dealt with the experiment obviously, one-third dealt with it in a disguised way and one-third related to other material. In this situation, where one or two male experimenters monitored EEG and eye-movement tracings in a room adjacent to the sleeping subjects, male volunteers dreamt largely of castration anxiety, and female volunteers dreamt largely of sexual exploitation. There was a striking contrast between their overt cooperativeness and the amount of anxiety manifested in the dreams.
