Abstract
Certain cholesterogenic mixtures have been claimed to exhibit three “blue” phases (BP), two of which are connected by a second-order transition. This effect has been seen only in mixtures. It is shown that there are two-phase regions over large temperature ranges, and that compositional segregation can cause the appearance of a second-order phase transition where in fact none exists. The phase diagram of CB15-E9 mixtures is presented, along with evidence of chemical segregation. The boundary of the “BPIIb” region coincides with that of a two-phase region. It is predicted that pure systems or mixtures not showing broad two-phaseKeywords
