Abstract
Cultured somatic cells of three elephants, male and female Asian (Elephas maximus) and female African (Loxodonta africana), had 56 chromosomes. Karyotypes of the Asian specimens were morphologically identical, except for the sex chromosomes, and that of the African specimen closely similar. Identification of the African X was made by inference. Keywords
