Influence of Boron on Enzymatic Reactions Associated with Biosynthesis of Sucrose

Abstract
Boron (10 umoles/ml) has been observed to enhance the biosynthesis of sucrose by sugar cane and pea seedling homogenates. With an enzyme preparation from pea seeds containing uridine disphosphate glucose (UDPG) pyrophosphorylase, UDPG transglycosylase, and uridine di-phosphate kinase, boron inhibited the synthesis of sucrose from uridine triphosphate, glucose-1-phosphate and fructose. In this coupled reaction adenosine triphosphate (ATP) was essential and boron caused the concentration of UDPG to be maintained; however, UDPG pyrophosphorylase and UDGP transglycosylase were inhibited by ATP when assayed individually. UDPG pyrophosphorylase activity was enhanced by boron while UDPG transglycosylase was inhibited.This publication has 17 references indexed in Scilit:
