Abstract
To the Editor.— It has been believed that Mongolian spots regress spontaneously after the age of 2 years and are not found after the age of 8. However, I examined 9,996 healthy Japanese policemen between the ages of 18 and 26, and found the persistent Mongolian spots in 410 individuals (4.1%). The age distribution was from 18 to 22 years, rarely between 23 and 26 years. This sample represents about 1/5,000 of all Japanese males and 1/650 of all Japanese young men of the same age group. The Mongolian spots in the adult are flat, round or oval, rather ill-defined macules which are blue-gray, slate, or steel blue in color. The majority of the spots are uniformly pigmented though at times speckled. In 22 cases the bluish macules were superimposed with groups of brown dotted pigmentations. Persistent Mongolian spots are usually solitary but occasionally two or three spots were foundThis publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
