Influence of Nonsteroidal Antirheumatic Drugs on Collagen Metabolism in Rats with Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis

Abstract
In rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis, the effects of sodium salicylate 300 mg/kg daily, phenylbutazone 100 mg/kg daily, and chloroquine Collagen metabolism 30 mg/kg daily on the were studied. In untreated animals with adjuvant-induced arthritis, the catabolism of newly formed collagen is intensified and the conversion of soluble collagen to insoluble collagen is slowed down. Sodium salicylate normalized the changes in collagen metabolism – accelerated the conversion of soluble to insoluble collagen and inhibited the catabolism of newly formed collagen. Phenylbutazone did accelerate this conversion, but remained ineffective on the enhanced catabolism of collagen. The metabolic changes exhibited no favorable response to the treatment with chloroquine.
