Abstract
The best of this year's work will be found in the historiographical field (i.e. on how to do history of psychiatry), and in that of the history of its main clinical categories. The attention of the reader is particularly drawn to the papers by Marx, Rogers and Habermas (in the former category), and Wilkins, Turner, Allam and Merskey, Catonne, David and Parry-Jones (in the latter category). These papers set new standards, and show the extent to which clinicians are beginning to contribute to historical scholarship. On the other hand, this year's crop of papers on the history of individual symptoms has been too small; let us hope that it is made good in the near future.
