Abstract
The effect of streptomycin on the multiplication of Rickettsia prowazeki, R. mooseri, and R. orientalis in embryo-nated eggs was studied. Streptomycin in doses of 2 mg. per egg had a slight inhibitory action on R. prowazeki and R. mooseri but not on R. orientalis. The effect was almost negligible by contrast with that of p-aminobenzoic acid. The authors advise against the use of streptomycin to reduce bacterial growth in attempts to isolate typhus strains from contaminated sources, if only a few rickettsiae are present in the starting material. Keywords
