Effect of Bovine Growth Hormone on Serine Dehydratase in Rat Liver

Abstract
The effect of bovine growth hormone on serine dehydratase of rat liver was examined to obtain evidence for the anticatabolic action of growth hormone. Serine dehydratase activity decreased in both normal and hypophysectomized rats following the daily administration of 200 [mu]g of growth hormone for 3 days. Other pituitary hormones, including ACTH, TSH [thyroid-stimulating hormone], LH [luteinizing hormone] and FSH [follicle-stimulating hormone], and testosterone, were not effective. Administration of bovine growth hormone also decreased the serine dehydratase activity elevated by a 48-hr. fast. Liver serine dehydratase activity was markedly increased by alloxan diabetes but this was not affected by growth hormone administration. It is concluded from these experiments that bovine growth hormone has an inhibitory effect on the catabolism of serine and that insulin is necessary for this action.
