Abstract
Role loss in old age excludes and devalues people, sorely undermining their social identity. While response to such stress varies with personality factors, it invariably improves with strong group support. But the aged are not a viable group, and their memberships and solidary ties wither away. Consequently, there is no ready structural compensation for the social losses of aging, although public policy and political activity might yield some alternatives. Keywords
