A MINIATURE FLUME FOR SAMPLING INTERRILL OVERLAND FLOW

Abstract
A miniature flume for sampling interrill overland flow is described. Installed on a hillslope, the flume offers minimal disturbance to the natural pattern of overland flow and permits measurements farther downslope. Analytical procedures are presented whereby data from multiple flumes, installed to sample overland flow through a cross-section, can be processed to yield total discharge and sediment load for the section. Sample results from two 18-m cross-sections on a semiarid hillslope show that discharge and sediment load do not increase linearly downslope, as hitherto assumed. These findings are explained in terms of spatial variations in infiltration and raindrop detachment rates. [Key words: geomorphology, hydrology, flume, overland flow.]
