The Project Manager--Anomalies and Ambiguities.

Abstract
“The Project Manager — Anomalies and Ambiguities” deals with some of the problems that project managers face in the everyday operation and implementation of complex missions. The emphasis is on the focal position of the project manager and the maintenance of his boundary position within the total organizational system. The article focuses on four areas: (1) managing human interrelationships in the project organization; (2) maintaining a balance between the technical and managerial project functions; (3) coping with the risk associated with project management; and (4) surviving organizational restraints. The discussions of these areas are tied into a broader generic framework and give some preliminary insights into the management styles of the effective project manager and suggest several diverse areas for future research through a series of propositions related to each area examined.
