The communication abilities of 2‐ to 4‐year‐old twins

Abstract
The speech and language abilities of preschool multiple-birth children (MBC) are often reported to be impaired. In this study, the syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, articulation and phonological skills of 19 sets of MBC were assessed. The comparisons made were between MBC and matched singleton controls, between siblings within multiple-birth sets, and for each multiple-birth child with different conversational partners (sibling versus speech and language therapist). The results indicated that the MBC performed more poorly than the singleton controls on measures of syntax and phonology. Whilst there were quantitative and qualitative similarities between siblings' linguistic abilities, their phonologies were not identical, and the MBC's speech and language changed with different conversational partners. The implications of the results for the existence of ‘twin language’, choice of language sample for assessment of functional communication and the need for preventive intervention programmes are discussed. Il est d'usage courant de croire que les capacités langagières et d'expression orale des enfants d'âge pré-scolaire et issus de naissances multiples (INM) sont inférieures à la normale. Cette étude a visé à mesurer les capacités syntactique, sémantique, pragmatique, articulatoire et phonologique de 19 ensembles d'enfants INM, grâce à diverses comparaisons: entre des INM et des enfants nés seuls; au sein d'un même groupe INM, entre frères et soeurs; et pour chaque enfant INM, lors de conversations avec différents interlocuteurs (avec les frères et soeurs, ou l'orthophoniste). Les résultats ont montré que, lors de mesures de syntaxe et de phonologie, les enfants INM étaient inférieurs aux enfants nés seuls qui servaient de contrôle; qu'entre frères et soeurs ils y avait des différences phonologiques malgré les similitudes quantitatives et qualitatives de leurs capacités linguistiques; et que la langue et l'expression orale des enfants INM changeaient en fonction des interlocuteurs. L'article discute les conséquences possibles de ces résultats en ce qui concerne l'existence d'un langage spécial que les jumeaux utiliseraient entre eux; et il examine la question du choix de l'échantillon linguistique qui s'impose pour évaluer la communication fonctionnelle ainsi que le besoin d'établir des programmes d'intervention à titre préventif. Es wird oft berichtet, dass die Sprech- und Sprachfähigkeiten von Kindern einer Mehrfachgeburt (MBC-Kinder) im Vorschulalter beeinträchtigt sind. In dieser Studie wurden die syntaktischen, semantischen, pragmatischen, artikulatorischen und phonologischen Fähigkeiten von 19 Gruppen von MBC-Kindern untersucht. Die MBC-Kinder wurden mit den folgenden Kontrollgruppen verglichen: Einzelkinder; Geschwister innerhalb der MBC-Gruppe; MBC Kinder mit verschiedenen Gesprächspartnern (Geschwister und Sprachtherapeuten). Im Vergleich zu den Einzelkindern waren die Leistungen der MBC-Kinder bei den syntaktischen und phonologischen Bewertungen schlechter. Während sowohl quantitative als auch qualitative Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den linguistischen Fähigkeiten von Geschwistern vorhanden waren, waren ihre Phonologien nicht identisch, und die Sprache und das Sprechen der MBC-Kinder änderte sich je nach Gesprächspartner. Wir besprechen die Ergebnisse mit Hinsicht auf die Frage der Existenz einer ‘Zwillingssprache’; Auswahl von Sprachbeispielen für die Bewertung der funkionellen Kommunikation und den Bedarf für vorbeugende Therapieprogramme.
